The university’s archaeology and history building was quiet. The classrooms on both sides of the hallway were empty. Empty, that was, except for a single form covered by a white sheet just inside a classroom doorway.

No. Not another murder, not here. Lucian had promised they’d be safe. Had promised the city would be safe.

Then the shouting started, and a torrent of rage, concern, and annoyance slammed into Astrea so hard she took half a step back. She didn’t even look up at Lucian or Jin; she just sprinted toward Kostas’s office.

Jin and Lucian both let out a string of curses as they followed her. Astrea ran up the stairs to the second floor, then followed two more corridors until she got to that familiar office door.

The closer she got, the more she could hear Kostas’s incoherent rant. Rage pressed and pressed against her bones, suffocating. Astrea skidded to a stop just outside his office only to find Marko standing there.

“I think it’s obvious what happened here, Professor,” Marko said.

The entire office was trashed. Books were scattered on the floor, pages torn to shreds and the rest burned black. The maps and diplomas that once decorated Kostas’s office walls covered the floor, the glass front of their frames shattered. Fragments of artifacts—old tablets, jewelry, and miniature statues Astrea had seen just a couple days before—lay scattered among it all, destroyed beyond recognition. It was all gone.

And painted on the top of the professor’s desk was the mark of the Paragon. Two concentric circles and a four-point star.

“What the skies happened?” Lucian asked, his voice sharp.

“You haven’t seen the worst part yet,” Marko said, motioning for them to go into the office. “Look at what’s painted above the door.”

Astrea pushed past Jin and stepped into the office. Slowly, she turned to look at the spot above the door, just like Marko said. There, in the same white paint used to paint the Paragon symbol on the desk, were just four words.

Give us the Lightbringer.

Jin cursed, and Astrea closed her eyes.

Why? Why did they want her? Why were they doing this, murdering people, just to get to her? She was nobody.

“I assume that is about you, Miss Sovna,” Marko said.

Lucian stepped into the room, another string of curses falling from his lips as he examined that same wall. “Who was on duty with you this morning?” he snapped at Marko.

“Cari,” Marko said. “I sent her to look around the campus for any of these voids you mentioned.”

“Fine. Go find her. The police will be here soon, and I want this place watched round the clock. When you’re done, come back to the palace.”

“That’s it?” Kostas snapped, his aura bursting red with rage. “No apology? This is my life’s work! Gone! Destroyed! You did not tell me this would happen.”

Astrea swallowed, turning to survey the rest of the office again. Broken glass crunched under her shoes. If the void mages already knew Kostas was working with them . . . had they followed Astrea?
